Lady Sylvia Ashley, London 1928

It’s official. I’m going to London this August!

Silky got her first taste of the travel bug when she embarked on a cruise to Northern Africa with the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland prior to her marriage to Lord Ashley. She toured Europe and the Orient with her second husband, Douglas Fairbanks, (complete with a voyage on the Hindenburg) and was a frequent visitor to both the Bahamas and Hawaiian Islands.

In celebration of what would have been Silky’s 111th birthday on April Fool’s day, I offer a peek into her London through a rare color video circa 1927 depicting the streets and sights she knew and loved.

It’s haunting how modern it seems and how few landmarks have changed. Only the occasional horse-drawn carriage, vintage cars and clothing give away the time period.

I’m absolutely thrilled for my trip this summer and can hardly wait! Is it too soon to start packing?
